Bio-documentary Advanced Screening on March 8

Filmmaker Steven Brand and Rabbi David Lieber, President Emeritus of the University of Judaism, will view 30 minutes of the proposed 90-minute documentary. “Praying With My legs” is about the life, times, and teachings of Abraham Joshua Heschel, who counted the UJ’s esteemed Dr. Lieber among his students.

Abraham Joshua Heschel(1907-1972), served as Professor of Jewish Ethics and Mysticism at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America from 1945 to 1972. Revered for his devotion not just to Jewish education and tradition but to worldwide social justice, Heschel’s impact extended beyond the religious realm and American border. Having marched alongside Martin Luther King, Jr. in Selma, Alabama, Mrs. Coretta Scott King called Heschel "one of the great men of our time." He helped organize and serve as co-chairman of Clergy and Laity Concerned about Vietnam, a group which spearheaded the religious opposition to the war. He inspired in his students a deeper love and appreciation for Jewish literature, art, and spirit; he stimulated others through his own ceaseless, boundless passion for learning.

The Sigi Ziering Insitute Exploring the Ethical and Religious Implications of the Holocaust (SZI) is a division of the Center for Jewish Ethics at the University of Judaism. As a central event of the 20th century, the Holocaust impacted our understanding of divinity, humanity, responsibility, identity, and mankind’s capacity to do evil. To benefit the Jewish future and humankind, collectively, the SZI continues to discuss and learn from the ethical dimensions of this chapter of history. Upcoming events sponsored by the SZI include “Evangelical Christians and Jews” on Mar. 22, “The NY Times and the Holocaust” on Apr. 4, and the film workshop, “About Face,” on May 10.

“Praying With My legs” will be held at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Mar. 8 at the University of Judaism’s Colen Conference Center, 15600 Mulholland Drive, Bel Air. This is a free event sponsored by the UJ.. The UJ is located in the Sepulveda Pass, just east of the Mulholland Drive exit of the 405 Freeway. Parking is free. To RSVP, contact Ruthe at rsmall@ajula.edu or call (310) 470-1534.
